The first order of business is to have a sense of sediment distributions and dynamics in the target watersheds
Accurate estimation of mass and chemical export from a watershed is needed to predict the responses of a system to changes in both land use and climate. This is a challenge, as streams in regions subject to intense storms suddenly mobilize high sediment loads that are difficult to measure. But virtually nothing is known about sediment fluxes in the SMV and Jucu basins. Until that is understood, it is not possible to evaluate such detailed causes and effects.
To respond, the sparse historical records are summarized (TSS Historical Records). Then a set of detailed field measurement campaigns was conducted to provide the more detailed knowledge on baseflow and storm conditions (Base and Stormflow TSS). Finally, the initial steps on developing a sediment model are summarized.
